Long BioGRAPHY
Minco van der Weide is a documentary portrait photographer and writer based in London. His work is devoted to intimate interviews and portraits of leading thinkers, scientists, artists, and public figures, which he publishes as carefully crafted books under his imprint, Platonic Press.
Raised in the Netherlands, Minco’s childhood household was a place rife with art and learning. His father was a painter and his mother, a teacher. Both encouraged his creativity from a young age and, by sixteen, he had set up a small studio, which he used to develop his skill with portraiture. Moving image work came soon after, leading him to the Netherlands Film Academy. He went on to take an MA in film at the National Film and Television School in the United Kingdom. Later, he also read philosophy at the University of Cambridge.
Minco’s career has been defined by a commitment to creating meaningful and impactful work. While living in Sweden, he co-founded a sustainable startup and a Stockholm-based production company, exploring the intersection of creative storytelling, environmental responsibility, and social impact. Later, during his time in London, he established Platonic Films, a production company dedicated to creating films for a better world.
His work has been featured internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, and he has collaborated with changemakers, leaders, and visionaries to produce photography and films that amplify their ideas and contributions.
Portraiture is his chosen art form, and each photoshoot is crafted around the subject’s story. His "Portraits of" book series, published by Platonic Press, collects conversations with fascinating figures from the worlds of art, design, and culture into beautiful clothbound volumes designed with care. The first volume, Portraits of Philosophy, was initially conceived of as a documentary, and each addition to the collection aims to follow by bringing the people behind the craft to life on the page. Through photography, film, and personal projects, he remains focused on bridging ideas and art, creating work that fosters connection and reflection.
